A bit of this and that....

Over the weekend I got the black pen and a pile of photocopying paper out...

I spent a few hours thinking about the kinds of designs I would like to paint onto screens, and what products I would like to make. Lots of work still to do, but I had a nice time doodling and pondering.

Last year I participated in the 100 days project. I set out to paint for 100 days...but only managed to do it for 45 :) I just thought I'd show you that I have hung some of the little paintings in my home. I've grouped them for the kitchen....

and my living room.

As the wooden squares are quite light I have simply stuck them to the walls with blu-tack. It has been quite successful, except on exceptionally humid day this summer. Then I would come home to a few scattered on the floor!
And, new in my shop this week?  A pack of 6 gift cards....  I printed three flower designs onto unbleached cotton with either black or white ink. I then mounted the fabric onto card, so that the design can be seen on both…

Old plates and first prints...

I love old crockery and lately I have used some of the plates I own as the inspiration for the couple of hand painted screens I have made for screen printing.

The design I painted on Saturday...the subject of my previous blog post, was inspired by my love of blue and white china. So the first prints I made using the screen had to be in tones of blue.  I do plan to print the design in other colorways however.

My first hand painted screen, which I painted a couple of weeks ago was inspired by a blue and white plate (Blue Chatham) that I use every day.

Painting these screens has been a bit of an experiment. I've totally enjoyed making them and have learned a lot about what I can and can't do using various brushes, squeegee bottles, and masking fluid.  ...and I can't wait to give it a go again!

A new design...

I've just spent the day hand painting a new screen....

The design is based on a small painting I did as part of the 100 days of painting I did last winter.

I'm thinking, perhaps a cushion cover?

A bit of variety...

It's been quite a week! I've been sketching...

doodling....

 scribbling....

painting....

and finishing off some new coasters for my online shop....

I hope you've had a productive week too! Jill xx

Flowers...and other stuff...

Summer is winding down. There is just a hint of autumn in the air and the summer flowers are fading... But I managed to find a few flowers in the garden to photograph with the coasters and place mats I have made during the last week.

These sets of 6 place mats and coasters were made to order and have now been sent to their new homes. The pacific style designs are hand printed on wood. Four coats of varnish is then applied to give them a glossy finish.

Last week I also spent an evening painting a new screen. For a while now I have been wanting to hand paint the screens I use for screen printing, rather than designing them on my computer. Such was my enthusiasm that I just felt completely compelled to paint a screen one evening. I based the design on one of the paintings I did for my 100 days of painting last winter (day 37).

However, I didn't really think about what I am going to use the design for. So, though I'm quite pleased with the result and learned quite a lot about the…

Between tides...

Every year a group of my friends host a beach exhibition, when the tide is low, at Westmere Park Beach in Auckland. I didn't participate this year, but it is always fun to go and see what people have been up to.
It was a perfect day for it...hot and sunny, with very little wind.

This exhibit could have done with a little more breeze as the fish rotates with wind and in turn the tube in the mermaids torso rotates. Fortunately a passing lad was able to rotate the fish manually for us. Very kind ;)
