About

 Hi there!

Thanks for visiting Jill Butler Design!

My studio

Jill Butler Design is my small business specializing in hand screen printed homewares and accessories.

I have a studio at my home in Auckland, NZ where I like to design, paint, draw, print fabrics and make the products that I sell in my online store.

Here are some examples of my work, and my studio...

I am not a full time artist. I spend most days working as a gardener. But, when I can I love to spend time working on my latest projects in my studio.

Today, for instance, I was rained out from a gardening job, so have spent a delicious day listening to podcasts while hand painting some fabric and updating this blog.I just adore these unexpected bonus days in the studio!

I am a self taught artist, in that I never went to art school. However, I have been to many night classes and short courses over the years, delved into many inspirational books, worked alongside creative friends and lately of course have had access to the wonderful internet with all the amazing resources it brings.

But mostly it is has simply been time and practice that has been my teacher.

I hope you enjoy my blog.

Jill xx

100 days of doodling....

A couple of days ago, a friend of mine told me about a website where people commit to doing ...something....

...sketching...photography....painting....writing....

...each day for 100 days.

Unfortunately, that particular 100 day project has closed and the people on it are up to day 34 already, so I've decided to do my own version.

What I want to do ...for 100 days...is get out my black ink pen and draw...something...everyday for 100 days.

doodle #1
I'm often having a little whinge to myself that I don't do enough drawing and designing...so...

here goes...

It feels exciting...and who knows what new fabric designs may come out of it? But I don't really want to have too many goals or set directions. I'll just see where it goes....

My friend Terri is joining me in this challenge!

How about you? interested??

P.S. Take a look the page I have created called 100 days of doodling to see all the doodles I have done so far.

Wooden placemats...

Hello! I've just spent the afternoon and evening screen printing a selection of my designs onto wooden placemats for a customer...the Poi Room...a gorgeous store here in Auckland.

I haven't printed this design for a while. It was inspired by stained glass windows.

I'll start varnishing them tomorrow.
Now it's time to wind down and relax as it's 9.30 pm here....
I hope you've had a productive Monday!

I'm back ...on track...

Hello, it's been a while!
Life got a bit hectic there for a while, caring for elderly parents, one of whom is very ill. So of course it still is really busy, but new routines have emerged to cope with it all.
And I have taken a few days off during the past month and being rested helps a lot too. I got a bit too tired toward the end of last year and that wasn't much fun. But sometimes those bad times can instigate some good changes. It certainly has this time. I feel like I have strengthened my boundaries regarding my social life and prioritized eating well and getting enough sleep. Already I am feeling huge benefits. The challenge will be to keep these good things going! But I'm feeling determined and optimistic.
As part of an effort to bring more balance to my life I am now trying to limit my gardening business to mornings only. That means I have more flexibility to help my parents. And when I'm not required I'm going to use the time to put more time and energy i…
