Making...

This afternoon I put my book work aside (I'll pick them up again this evening) and did some making instead.

I printed the front of a cushion cover... The fabric I printed on is a gorgeous woven linen. Once it is heat set I am going to sew it up with a backing of black cotton drill.

I went a step further in the process of making a new screen....

And I glued felt on the backs of some coasters and placemats for my online store.
It feels nice to have had a productive afternoon.  I hope your day was nice as well?

While I toil....

While I toil into the night doing my books...

...she sleeps.
...I'm jealous... :)
Oh well...the sooner I get all this admin stuff done and to my accountant, the sooner I can get to the fun stuff again.

Setting myself up to....

Early on Saturday morning I wrote a list of all the things I would love to do this weekend. It is a long list, of household tasks, an outing I had planned, and some some of the things that are part of my current Jill Butler Design to do list, that I thought it would be great to achieve.

Well it is now Sunday afternoon and I have achieved very little on the list! I can tick off only 5 items and have done a little towards a couple more.
My first instinct is to get cross with myself...and this isn't even logical. I've been busy...I've been doing...and I had set myself up to fail!! :)
There was never any chance of my completing all the things on my list in only 2 days. I think realistically I will be pushing it to do all these thing (and do my regular paid work) by the end of the week.
So it got me wondering why I was so unrealistic at the beginning of the weekend? I think I was really writing a list of possibilities. At that stage I didn't want to pin myself down. I wa…

Being a little bit brave....

I've decided to do something brave. In fact I've already started doing it. I started this week, but by mentioning it here on this blog I'm hoping it will take on a more official sort of status in my mind.

You may or may not know, but making things and screen printing is very much a sideline for me. Basically I earn my living through gardening, housework and tutoring.
I have been really frustrated recently because I am just not getting enough time to work on my Jill Butler Design projects.
So...this week I have decided that I'm going to spend Tuesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon in my studio. Added to my regular evening and weekend work, hopefully more progress will be made...more new designs and products.
There...it's official.
It may not seem like much as you read this. Where's the bravery in that you ask? Well, it's basically dropping a day from my regular employment, so it's just that money thing... It just feels risky and that's the reas…

Daisies....

This lovely pot of daisies is currently brightening my deck. It's great to have such a profusion of colour in the middle of winter.

I love daisies.... They’re such and honest, unpretentious sort of flower, don’t you think? Pretty and cheerful.

...and in my family we have a soft spot for this  particular variety, the Shasta daisy, as they were the flower in my mothers wedding bouquet....

Mum and dad still grow the same variety in their garden and in January, the month of their wedding anniversary, they flower.

So, it's only logical that daisies are the subject of one of my designs.

I love their simplicity and timeless appeal.

My studio....

I am always fascinated with peoples studios. I love visiting my friend's studios. They are usually very distinctive and I enjoy the feeling of being behind the scenes where all the work gets done. A friend of mine paints in oils and so added to everything else, hers has a wonderful smell of paint. When I enter her studio I take a deep breath and I just know I'm entering a place that will inspire me.
So far I haven't shared any glimpses of my studio on this blog. So I thought it was about time I did.
....particularly as due to a bit of a clean up yesterday it is in a semi tidy state...
(I seem to be able to make it chaotic and messy in the blink of an eye!)
So... this is where I use my computer, print, draw, paint and make.

Behind my desk area are big deep shelves that are brilliant for storing all those bits and pieces, screens, fabric, ink, stock....

Completing...

Hi there!
This week I am determined to complete lots of the projects I started a while back and never quite finished.
Today it is all about placemats!

All I needed to do was put the black felt backing on them to finish them. So that is what I have done today. And I have photographed them so that I can put them in my shop. I'm not sure I'm going to achieve all of that tonight. Particularly as the heater in my studio has just decided to die so it's starting to get very cold!
Anyway...something off my to do list! :)

Rose scarf...

The recent wintry weather has inspired me to make a snugly scarf....
I screen printed my rose design onto white and grey t-shirting fabric and sewed intermittent plain black t-shirting strips to create a relaxed patchwork effect. The back of the scarf is plain grey.
This afternoon I had a little photo shoot....

Work in progress....

Hello! It's been a while! Here's a few pictures to give you an idea of what I've been up to lately...

For the first time in ages I have my sewing machine out. I have an idea for some winter scarves now the weather has cooled. I have just about finished my first one. I'll photograph it properly when it's finished.

I've also been playing around with some new designs, using brushes and India ink. A real departure for me as I usually design with a black pen. But as my latest enthusiasm is towards hand painting my screen printing screens, designing in a more painterly way seems logical.

And I have begun the process of painting another screen. This is based upon one of the drawings I produced when I did the 100 days of doodling....day 33.
All these are all works in progress. I feel like I'm going through a time where I have lots of ideas I want to try. I am skipping from one project to another, then back again. Lots of little pots on the boil. It's quite a …
